A professional heat pump service in New Zealand typically costs between about $120 and $200 including GST for a standard residential unit. Here's what's included, what changes the price, and how often your heat pump needs servicing.
At Heat Pumps Hamilton we charge $140 plus GST per residential unit, which covers a full service of the indoor and outdoor unit, a filter clean, an electrical check and a written report.
What you actually pay depends on where you live, who does the work, and how many units you have serviced at once. Below is a straight answer to what drives the price, so you can tell whether a quote is fair.
A proper heat pump service is more than a filter wash. Ours includes:
Removal and cleaning of the indoor filters
Inspection and cleaning of the indoor coil
Inspection of the outdoor unit, including clearing debris and checking airflow space
Refrigerant and performance check
Electrical connection check, which matters because a loose connection or a failing component can be a safety issue before it is a performance issue
Drain check, so water is not building up where it should not
A written service report
Some companies offer cheap "clean only" specials, often from around $80. Those usually cover the filters and a wipe-down of the indoor unit. That is genuinely useful between services, but it is not the same job. If a price looks very cheap, ask exactly what is included before you book.
Number of units. Most companies, including us, reduce the per-unit price when you service several heat pumps in one visit. We charge $120 plus GST per unit for three or more.
Commercial units. Heavier duty systems in shops, offices and other workplaces generally cost a bit more to service. Ours are $165 plus GST.
Access. An outdoor unit on a steep section, behind a fence line or on a high wall takes longer to work on. Some providers charge extra for difficult access.
What the service uncovers. A service is an inspection as well as a clean. If we find a fault, a refrigerant issue or a failing part, the repair is quoted separately. You approve any extra work before it happens.
Who does the work. A qualified electrician can check the electrical side of the system properly. Many heat pump technicians cannot, because electrical work on a fixed-wired appliance is legally electrical work in New Zealand. An electrician's service can catch problems a clean-only visit would miss.
Once a year is the standard recommendation for most New Zealand homes, and it is also what most manufacturers expect if you want warranty claims to go smoothly. If your heat pump works hard through a Waikato winter, or you have pets, an annual service keeps it efficient and catches small faults early.
Between services, clean the filters yourself. Most manufacturer manuals suggest washing the mesh filters every two to four weeks in winter. It takes five minutes and it is the single biggest thing you can do to keep running costs down, because clogged filters make the unit work harder for less heat.
If a heat pump is very old and the service uncovers a major fault, it is worth pausing before paying for repairs. A new mid-size system, professionally installed, often makes more sense than repeated repairs on a unit near the end of its life. We always give you the honest comparison before you decide.
